Safeco Field Facts
Since the inaugural game in 1999 Safeco Field has become one
of the premier attractions in Major League Baseball. More than
3.5 million baseball fans attended games there in the 2001 inaugural
season and that number is only expected to grow in the years
to come.
With a seating capacity of 47,116 Safeco is one of the largest
ballparks in baseball today. Seattle Mariners fans pack the
house nearly every night, setting the standard with a record
attendance average of 45,578 in the 2001 opening season.
The roof is a one of a kind retractable shelter that is designed
to cover but not enclose the ballpark. It weighs nearly 22
million pounds and contains enough steel to build a 55 story
skyscraper!
